The digital caliper is the most used measuring instrument in any workshop, and the reason is the four functions in one tool: outside, inside, depth and step. It is not the most accurate instrument available, but it is the one that gets used, and a measurement that is taken is worth more than one that is not.
The practical vulnerabilities are the slide and the display. A caliper dropped on a hard floor may still read, but the beam can be bent, and a bent beam reads differently along its length. Checking the zero at both ends of the travel, and against a known gauge block, catches both problems.
Features
- Four measurement functions in one instrument: outside, inside, depth and step
- Capacitive encoder that holds its zero when the display is switched off
- Instant metric and inch conversion on the display
- Locking screw to hold a reading while it is transferred
- Supplied in a protective case with a spare battery

Certification and compliance
Certification documents not yet supplied
Certifications are only published once a certificate copy can be produced, so this section is deliberately empty rather than populated with assumed approvals. Tell us which approvals your application requires and we will confirm what is available for this instrument.
Parameters still to be confirmed
The following are required for a complete specification but are not stated in the documentation supplied to us. They are listed rather than estimated:
- Certification list (CE / RoHS / EMC) and availability of certificate copies
- Accuracy reference standard defining the stated accuracy class
- Operating temperature range
- Ingress protection rating of the supplied variant
- Warranty period and the terms that apply
- English-language datasheet and manual in PDF form
- Wiring diagram and terminal definitions
- Packaging dimensions and gross weight for freight calculation
Frequently asked questions
Is a caliper accurate enough for inspection?
For dimensions with a tolerance of around 0.05 mm or looser, yes. For tighter work a micrometer is the correct instrument, because a caliper measures along a jaw edge and is sensitive to how the operator holds it.
How should it be checked?
Zero it closed and confirm it reads zero at the far end of the range against a gauge block. That tests both the encoder and the straightness of the beam, and beam damage is the failure that an operator will not otherwise notice.
