Application

Energy Efficiency Testing

Establishing and documenting the consumption of equipment, systems and production lines over defined operating cycles.

Why this measurement is difficult to get right

Energy efficiency testing is a measurement over time rather than a measurement at a moment. The result is a ratio between delivered output and consumed input, accumulated across a representative operating cycle, and it is only as good as the accuracy of both sides of that ratio.

Because efficiency results are frequently contractual or regulatory, the instrument accuracy class and the calibration interval become commercial parameters. Reporting a figure from an uncalibrated instrument invites challenge.

What has to be measured

  • Electrical energy consumption accumulated over a defined cycle.
  • Low-power and standby consumption in the same instrument range.
  • Thermal output where the equipment delivers heat or cooling.
  • Flow, temperature difference and pressure where hydraulic or thermal efficiency is calculated.

Which instrument measures what

Measurement to instrument map
Quantities to measure Instrument family
Energy accumulation and power measurement Digital power meters with energy and time functions
Low-power and standby consumption Low-current power meters
Thermal output Temperature measurement and flow measurement
Long-duration recording Data acquisition and monitoring

Practical considerations

  • Confirm the energy accumulation function directly; not every power meter integrates and displays watt-hours.
  • Use instruments whose accuracy class supports the pass-fail threshold in the applicable regulation, not merely the resolution of the display.
  • Define the operating cycle before measurement begins, because an unrepresentative cycle produces an unrepresentative ratio.

Frequently asked

Energy Efficiency Testing questions

Does a power meter always measure energy as well?

Not necessarily. Some instruments display instantaneous power only. If the test requires consumption in kWh over a cycle, confirm that the energy accumulation function is present rather than assuming it.
