Building and maintaining test benches and calibration loops for instruments, components and assemblies.
A test bench is a measurement system rather than a single instrument, and its validity depends on the weakest link in the chain. A bench built around a reference instrument of unknown traceability will produce confident numbers that cannot be defended.
The practical sequence is to define the quantity and range, choose a reference several times more accurate than the tolerance being judged, and then arrange the signal path so nothing in it degrades the reference.

A widely used working ratio is four to one, meaning the reference uncertainty should be at most a quarter of the tolerance being judged. A larger ratio gives more confidence but raises cost quickly.
