Power Supply Testing

Measuring efficiency, no-load and standby consumption, regulation and power factor of adapters, chargers and supplies.

Why this measurement is difficult to get right

Power supply testing lives at the extremes of the measuring range. Full-load efficiency is measured at the top of the range, while no-load and standby consumption are measured at a fraction of a watt - and both are normally reported in the same test report from the same instrument.

This is why low-end performance dominates the specification. An instrument that is excellent at 20 A but cannot resolve 0.5 mA will not produce a usable standby power figure, while a wide-range design that keeps its resolution across the span handles the entire test sequence without reconfiguring.

What has to be measured

  • Input power at no load and in standby, typically below one watt.
  • Input and output power at rated load, from which efficiency is calculated.
  • Power factor and input current waveform behaviour.
  • Temperature rise and output regulation under sustained load.

Which instrument measures what

Measurement to instrument map
Quantities to measure Instrument family
Wide-range input power with fine low-end resolution Digital power meters and AC/DC electrical parameter testers
Low-power and standby measurement Low-current power meters with high resolution at the bottom of the range
Efficiency calculation and comparison Power meters with communication output and recording
Thermal behaviour under load Temperature measurement and data logging

Practical considerations

  • Check the minimum measurable current, not only the maximum. The standby figure is usually the one under regulatory scrutiny.
  • For adapters with DC output, confirm whether the instrument accepts DC input as well as AC, because output-side measurement may require it.
  • Confirm the crest factor the instrument tolerates, since the input current of a switching supply is highly peaked.
  • Accuracy class and the reference standard must support the pass-fail threshold in the applicable efficiency regulation.

Frequently asked

Power Supply Testing questions

Why is standby power harder to measure than full-load power?

Standby consumption can be three orders of magnitude below rated load. The instrument has to resolve that level while still handling full load without a range change, which places the emphasis on low-end resolution rather than on maximum range.

Can the same instrument measure AC input and DC output?

Only if it supports both AC and DC measurement modes. Instruments specified for AC only will not deliver an output-side DC figure, which means efficiency cannot be calculated from a single unit.
