A multimeter is judged on two things that have nothing to do with resolution: whether it survives the environment in front of it, and whether it reads correctly on the distorted waveforms that inverters and switch-mode supplies produce.

That second point is why true RMS matters. A meter that averages will under-read current on a drive output or an LED supply by a margin that can exceed 40%, which is enough to select the wrong cable or the wrong breaker. If the work involves drives, UPS systems or electronic loads, the measurement method is part of the specification.

Features

  • True RMS measurement that reads correctly on distorted and non-sinusoidal waveforms
  • CAT III safety rating with fused current ranges and high-energy transient protection
  • Data hold, min/max recording and relative measurement modes
  • Logging output for connection to a PC or a data acquisition system
  • Backlit display for use in plant rooms and enclosures

Certification and compliance

Certification documents not yet supplied

Certifications are only published once a certificate copy can be produced, so this section is deliberately empty rather than populated with assumed approvals. Tell us which approvals your application requires and we will confirm what is available for this instrument.

Parameters still to be confirmed

The following are required for a complete specification but are not stated in the documentation supplied to us. They are listed rather than estimated:

  • Certification list (CE / RoHS / EMC) and availability of certificate copies
  • Accuracy reference standard defining the stated accuracy class
  • Operating temperature range
  • Ingress protection rating of the supplied variant
  • Warranty period and the terms that apply
  • English-language datasheet and manual in PDF form
  • Wiring diagram and terminal definitions
  • Packaging dimensions and gross weight for freight calculation

Frequently asked questions

What does true RMS actually change?

It changes the number. An averaging meter assumes a clean sine wave; on the output of a drive, a UPS or a switch-mode supply the waveform is not sinusoidal and the averaging meter under-reads. True RMS measures the equivalent heating value and matches what the load actually experiences.

What does CAT III mean?

It describes the transient energy the meter is built to survive, based on where in the installation it is used. CAT III covers distribution-level circuits from the panel board outwards; CAT II is portable equipment on a branch circuit.
