A personal gas detector is a life-safety device, and the specification that matters is not the sensor resolution but the confidence that it will alarm. That depends on bump testing and calibration discipline far more than on the instrument.
The two failure modes to design against are a sensor that has drifted out of calibration and a detector that is switched off. Pumped sampling extends the instrument to confined spaces and remote points where diffusion alone will not reach, while a datalog provides the record that a permit-to-work system requires.

Frequently asked questions
What is a bump test and how often is it needed?
A bump test exposes the sensor to a known concentration briefly, to confirm it responds and alarms. It is not a calibration. Most permit-to-work systems require it before each shift or each entry, whichever is less frequent.
Diffusion or pumped?
Diffusion is adequate for personal protection where the wearer is in the atmosphere being monitored. A pump is required for confined space entry, where the atmosphere has to be sampled from several depths before the space is entered.
